ST MARY'S ACADEMY & COVID-19 PREVENTION, SUMMER 2020

THE CHALLENGE
Our client, St. Mary’s Academy, is a prestigious, Roman Catholic, all-girls high school, located in Portland, OR. Founded in 1859, it is the oldest continuingly-operating secondary school in the state of Oregon.
With the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic across the country, it was quickly realized that, in order for the school to operate in a manner that was safe for staff, students, family members and visitors, additional cleaning and disinfecting would have to be undertaken. Atlas Facilities Maintenance, which was already providing cleaning services for the school, was contacted and asked to find a resolution to this issue.

THE ATLAS APPROACH
Understanding the importance of the situation and the need to prevent the spread of COVID-19 via contact with flat or frequently-touched surfaces, Atlas recommended that St. Mary’s add regular high-quality disinfecting to their cleaning schedule. This was accepted and quickly began to be undertaken by specially trained Atlas cleaning staff.

The disinfecting regime recommended by Atlas both here and for other COVID-19-prevention strategies is to use the most advanced equipment on the market that utilizes electrostatic sprayer technology. Using EPA-approved disinfectants allows us to clean and sanitize a space significantly more effectively than traditional cleaning methods.

An electrostatic sprayer works on a molecular level, positively-charging particles of the special disinfecting solution. These charged particles completely encapsulate all surfaces, resulting in a thorough coating of disinfectant, even on 3D and hard-to-reach surfaces. This method provides better results, and is also up to 10 times more efficient than conventional cleaning methods, reducing the cost to our clients. Undertaken by trained staff, electrostatic spraying is safe and suitable for use in a variety of indoor environments and can disinfect up to 55,000 square feet per hour.

RESULTS
Since the electrostatic spraying was added to the cleaning services being provided by Atlas, there have been no reported outbreaks of COVID-19 among the staff, students, family members, or visitors at St. Mary’s Academy.
Atlas is delighted with this result and sees it as a demonstration of the positive effects that such an approach to disinfecting can have in playing a key role in preventing the spread of COVID-19. Atlas has been and will continue to provide this service to St. Mary’s Academy, as well as offer it to our existing and any new clients as part of a recommended custom-tailored cleaning and facilities management program.
