The Benefits of a Clean Workspace

Here at Atlas Facilities Maintenance, our focus is on ensuring that we provide the very highest in standards of cleaning and janitorial services to our corporate clients. But why is it important that a workspace be clean and well-maintained? This blog will focus on that question and what Team Atlas can do for you.

In a recent study carried out by the International Data Corporation, it was demonstrated that untidy and dirty workplaces cost businesses millions of dollars in lost productivity. A cluttered and chaotic workspace results in employees becoming easily-distracted and wasting time having to do wasteful tasks like find documents or equipment, which would be more easily-available in a well-maintained environment.

This research was supported by a study carried out by Princeton University, which showed that clutter makes it more difficult for people to focus on completing particular tasks. More-specifically, the researchers found that the brain’s visual cortex is easily overwhelmed by task-irrelevant objects and clutter, making it difficult to allocate attention and complete tasks in an efficient manner.

Having a clean and well-managed work environment is also important for organizations to have if they wish to present a positive and professional appearance. Ensuring that public spaces are cared for and well-maintained can be difference between a client choosing to give an organization their business and their going to a rival. The importance of this in reputational management should be not underestimated.

Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has clearly demonstrated how essential it is for workplaces to be kept clean, as well as tidy. Ensuring that public spaces are clean and thoroughly disinfected helps prevent the growth of bacteria and the spread of potentially harmful germs which can cause serious illness. Illness-related lost productivity costs businesses $530 billion per year, per a new report from the Integrated Benefits Institute (IBI), a non-profit health and productivity research organization. That amounts to 60 cents for every dollar employers spend on health care benefits.
